## Long description

The Derwent XL Inktense Blocks 6-Piece Set in Tin offers a unique approach to drawing and painting by combining the intense, vibrant color of ink with the tactile freedom of a solid block. These highly pigmented, water-soluble tools are designed for artists who require versatility, allowing for everything from broad, sweeping strokes to intricate, fine details. Once the ink dries on the surface, it becomes permanent and water-resistant, ensuring that your artwork remains stable and protected against moisture.
Advantages
These blocks provide exceptional color intensity that remains vivid even after dilution. Their unique shape allows for a wide range of mark-making techniques, including layering, blending, and texture creation. Because the ink is permanent once dry, artists can easily layer additional media on top without disturbing the underlying work, making them an excellent choice for complex mixed media projects. The compact tin packaging ensures that the blocks are protected and easy to transport for outdoor sketching or studio work.
Suitable for
Professional illustration and fine art drawing
Mixed media projects and layering techniques
Expressive sketching and mark-making
Large-scale background washes and bold color application
When it may not be suitable
These blocks may not be the best choice for artists who prefer traditional soft pastels that remain blendable and erasable indefinitely, as the permanent nature of Inktense ink makes it difficult to remove once applied. Additionally, they are not intended for use on surfaces that cannot withstand water application.
Key specifications
Set includes 6 highly pigmented ink blocks
Water-soluble formula
Permanent and water-resistant once dry
Versatile block shape for various stroke widths
Supplied in a durable metal storage tin
How to use
To use the Derwent XL Inktense blocks, you can apply them directly to dry paper to achieve bold, saturated color, or use them on damp paper for softer, more fluid effects. For watercolor-like washes, simply add water with a brush to the applied pigment to dissolve the ink. You can also pick up pigment directly from the block with a wet brush. Once you are satisfied with your work, allow the ink to dry completely to achieve a permanent, water-resistant finish.
What to consider before purchase
Ensure your paper surface is suitable for water-based media
Consider the permanent nature of the ink when planning your workflow
Store in a cool, dry place to maintain block integrity
Usage recommendations
For the best results, experiment with different paper weights and textures to see how the pigment reacts. Always test your colors on a scrap piece of the same paper before starting your final project to ensure the desired saturation level.
