The Lightwin 3m LC - ST fibre optic cable uses a multimode OM3 fibre with a 50 µm core and an overall coated diameter of 125 µm. The ferrules in the cable's connectors are selected and manufactured to fit this diameter precisely: during assembly the fibre is inserted into the ferrule bore, glued and polished, so ferrule bore tolerance directly affects fibre centring and connection performance.
Advantages
Ferrules with a tight bore tolerance reduce lateral displacement of the fibre core and thus lower the risk of core misalignment at mating interfaces. For this Lightwin cable we use ferrules with a maximum bore diameter of 125.5 µm for singlemode-compatible ferrules and 126.5 µm for multimode assemblies, leaving only 0.5–1.5 µm clearance around the coated fibre. These strict tolerances improve repeatability and optical coupling compared with commonly available ferrules that have larger bores and looser tolerances.
