## Long description

The Petzl GRIGRI grey aluminium and steel tubular belay device with cam assistance is a standard-setting tool for both indoor gym climbing and outdoor crag sessions. Engineered for reliability, this device enhances safety and efficiency by utilizing a cam-assisted blocking system that activates when a climber falls or weights the rope. Weighing only 175 grams, its compact and durable construction provides exceptional control during both ascent and descent, making it an essential piece of equipment for climbers of various experience levels.
Advantages
The device features an ergonomic handle that allows for a smooth, comfortable descent and precise lowering control. The integrated cam-assisted blocking mechanism offers greater leeway for the brake-side hand position and helps catch falls using standard belay techniques. Built with a combination of durable aluminium and steel, it provides a balanced, lightweight, and long-lasting design with engraved rope installation diagrams on both the inside and outside for added convenience.
Suitable for
Indoor gym climbing and outdoor sport climbing
Lead climbing and top-roping sessions
Using with single dynamic ropes ranging from 8.5 to 11 mm in diameter
When it may not be suitable
This device is not designed for use with double or twin ropes, as it is strictly optimized for single ropes. It may also not be the best choice for absolute beginners who have not yet received proper instruction on operating cam-assisted belay devices safely.
Key specifications
Product type: Tubular belay device with cam assistance
Materials: Aluminium and steel
Product colour: Grey
Weight: 175 g
Rope compatibility: Single dynamic ropes from 8.5 to 11 mm (optimized for 8.9 to 10.5 mm)
How to use
To use the Petzl GRIGRI, first inspect the device for any signs of wear and correctly thread the single rope through the unit by following the engraved diagrams on the housing. Always keep at least one hand on the brake side of the rope at all times during feeding slack, catching falls, and lowering. When the climber weights the rope, the internal cam pivots to pinch and block the rope automatically. To lower the climber, use the ergonomic handle to progressively release the cam mechanism for a controlled and smooth descent.
What to consider before purchase
Ensure your climbing rope diameter falls within the 8.5 to 11 mm compatibility range
Verify that you are familiar with or willing to learn proper cam-assisted belay techniques
Confirm that the device meets your specific climbing discipline, such as sport climbing or gym sessions
Always keep a hand on the brake side of the rope and regularly inspect your belay device and ropes for wear before every climbing session.
