Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron, and his red Fokker Dr. I triplane became one of the most recognizable symbols of aerial combat in World War I. Introduced on the Western Front in June 1917 after extended testing and personal approval by von Richthofen, the Dr. I was noted for exceptional maneuverability and rapid climbing performance. Powered by an Oberursel radial engine rated at 110 PS, the aircraft could reach a top speed of 193 km/h and climb to 3000 m in approximately six minutes. The standard armament consisted of two forward-firing Spandau machine guns, and von Richthofen’s flight commonly flew in red-marked triplanes.
