RAID controller Adaptec SmartRAID 3151-4i
The Adaptec SmartRAID 3151-4i is a PCI Express x8 RAID controller designed for 12 Gbps SAS storage environments. It supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, offers up to 12 Gbit/s per port, and includes 1024 MB of internal cache memory for efficient data handling. The controller is a half-height card (167 mm × 64 mm) suited for a variety of server configurations and includes integrated flash-based cache protection with support for a tethered capacitor module for safe backup of cache to flash during power loss.
The SmartRAID 3151-4i delivers high bandwidth and IOPS when paired with 12 Gbps SSDs, and supports SSD read and write-back caching to accelerate transactional and database workloads. It provides up to 1.7 million IOPS on the SmartRAID family, native multi-port configurations, and integrated cache protection without batteries. Additional features include Mixed Mode operation (RAID and HBA concurrently), adapter power management to reduce power consumption, and management via the HTML5-based Adaptec maxView interface for local and remote administration.
Install the SmartRAID 3151-4i into an available PCIe x8 slot on a compatible server motherboard and connect SAS backplanes or drives using appropriate cables or breakout connectors. Configure RAID arrays through the Adaptec maxView web interface or via the controller’s firmware configuration utility during system boot. Enable SSD caching and select read or write-back caching policies where supported to optimize performance for your workload. Ensure the tethered capacitor module (ASCM-35F) is properly installed and monitored by firmware for flash-based cache backup functionality.
The controller is best used with 12 Gbps SSDs to maximize throughput and IOPS; enable maxCache features for mixed read/write acceleration, monitor firmware status for the capacitor module, and use adapter power management to reduce energy use in large deployments.
