Optical drive bay adapter Aptel AK184B for 9.5mm CD/DVD slot to 2.5" SATA III HDD/SSD
Aptel AK184B is a 9.5 mm optical drive bay adapter that allows replacing a laptop's slim CD/DVD drive with a mounting tray for a 2.5" SATA III HDD or SSD. The adapter provides a mechanical fit for standard 9.5 mm slim optical bays and exposes a SATA III data/power interface to the installed 2.5" drive. Designed for straightforward installation, it enables adding a secondary storage drive for capacity expansion, data separation or system cloning without modifying the system chassis.
The adapter supports SATA III 6 Gbps transfer rates when paired with a compatible drive and host interface, ensuring high-speed data access for SSDs and modern HDDs. Its slim 9.5 mm form factor matches common laptop optical bays and keeps the external appearance and mounting points intact. The unit offers a simple mechanical tray with secure screw mounts for 2.5" drives, minimizing vibration and ensuring stable connection to the host SATA port. It is a practical and reversible solution for adding secondary storage without requiring caddies or external enclosures.
Remove the laptop's optical drive following the manufacturer's service instructions and insert the Aptel AK184B adapter into the vacant 9.5 mm bay. Secure a 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD to the adapter tray using the provided screw holes, ensuring the drive's SATA connector aligns with the internal connector of the adapter. Slide the assembly into the bay until it seats and fasten any external retaining screws. After reassembly, boot the system and verify that the BIOS/UEFI and operating system detect the newly installed drive. If necessary, initialize, partition and format the drive from the operating system's storage management tools.
Use the adapter with drives that match the 2.5" SATA form factor and ensure the host laptop provides an internal SATA connection to the optical bay. For best performance with SATA III drives, confirm the laptop's internal interface supports SATA III speeds. Tighten mounting screws evenly and avoid over-torquing to prevent damage to the drive or adapter. When cloning system disks, use reliable cloning software and keep backups of important data before proceeding.
