Cam — Black Diamond Camalot C4, cam device, grey, working load 9 kN, rope Ø 15.5–26.7 mm, weight 77.5 g
The Black Diamond Camalot C4 is a range of spring-loaded camming devices designed for trad climbing and alpine protection. This updated C4 is approximately 10% lighter than previous versions while maintaining the durability and range expected from Camalot cams. The cam features sculpted, lighter lobes and a redesigned sling for easier identification on the rack, plus an enlarged trigger and a new trigger keeper on larger sizes to keep units contracted for compact racking.
The redesigned lobes optimize strength-to-weight, reducing overall weight without sacrificing performance. The double-axle construction preserves an extensive expansion range for each size. A continuous cable stem (C-Loop) provides strength and durability, and visual updates to the sling make size differentiation quicker when racking. Larger sizes include an innovative trigger keeper that holds the cam closed for neater, more compact racking and releases instantly when deploying.
The Camalot C4 is engineered for passive and active protection in cracks; it is not a substitute for bolts, pitons, or purpose-made aid gear in fixed protection scenarios. Very narrow or very flared placements outside the published range of each cam size may not provide secure placements.
Compress the trigger to retract the lobes, insert the cam into an appropriate crack or placement, and release the trigger so the lobes expand and engage the rock. For larger sizes fitted with the trigger keeper, use the keeper to hold the trigger closed for compact racking; release it when ready to place the cam. Clip a locking carabiner through the sling or use the LiteWire Rackpack for organized racking if available. Always confirm that the placement is solid and oriented correctly before weighting the cam.
Use the Black Diamond Camalot C4 as part of a complete protection strategy: place cams in solid rock, double-check placement direction and expansion, and back up marginal placements when possible. Maintain and inspect cams regularly for wire, sling, and moving-part wear; follow manufacturer care instructions and retire units showing significant damage.
