Camalot C4 cam (red) by Black Diamond — rope diameter min 3.02 cm, weight 123.9 g, single unit
The Black Diamond Camalot C4 is a redesigned version of the trusted Camalot camming device for rock climbing. The new C4 maintains durability while reducing weight by about 10%. It features sculpted lobes and a refreshed sling design to improve strength-to-weight performance and make gear identification easier on the rack.
The updated Camalot C4 is approximately 10% lighter than previous models while preserving the proven durability of the Camalot line. Sculpted, lighter lobes optimize strength-to-weight, and the updated slings offer clearer visual differentiation when racked. Larger sizes (#4–#8) include an innovative trigger keeper to hold the cams contracted for more compact racking, and the widened trigger improves handling during placements and removals.
The Camalot C4 is intended for use as active protection in placements; it is not a standalone piece of personal protective equipment and must be used according to climbing standards and techniques. Climbers should ensure the chosen size and placement match the rock features—some placements may require nuts or other passive protection instead.
Squeeze the trigger to retract the cam lobes, insert the cam into a suitably sized crack or placement, then slowly release the trigger so the lobes expand and engage the rock. For sizes with a trigger keeper, engage the keeper if you want the cam held in the contracted position for compact racking; release it before placing. Always clip an appropriate connector (carabiner and sling) to the cam’s stem or sling and verify each placement visually and by testing body weight in a controlled manner before committing to the route.
Use the Camalot C4 as part of a complete, properly assembled protection system. Regularly inspect cams, slings, and stems for wear or damage. Practice placements and racking techniques in a controlled environment before relying on them in exposed climbing situations.
