The Celestron X-Cel LX 1.25" 3x Barlow Lens is an optical accessory that increases the magnification of compatible 1.25" eyepieces by a factor of three. Its apochromatic, fully multi-coated optics are designed to improve color correction and contrast, making it suitable for detailed lunar and planetary observing when atmospheric conditions allow. The barrel is threaded to accept 1.25" filters so you can leave a filter in place while changing eyepieces.
This premium 3x Barlow provides a simple way to triple the effective focal length of your eyepieces without changing the eyepiece itself. The apochromatic multi-coated elements reduce chromatic aberration and improve contrast. The black anodized body with orange accents matches the X-Cel LX eyepiece line, while a centralized rubber grip and a brass compression ring with a thumbscrew secure eyepieces gently and protect barrels from scratches.
If your seeing conditions are poor or your telescope has a long focal length that already provides high magnification, using a 3x Barlow may produce dim, soft images. Very high magnification can exceed the useful resolution of some telescopes and the local atmosphere, so this accessory is not always the best choice for deep-sky, wide-field viewing or for use when stable seeing is absent.
Insert the Barlow lens between the telescope focuser and a 1.25" eyepiece, tighten the thumbscrew to engage the brass compression ring and secure the eyepiece, then focus the telescope as usual. If you keep a 1.25" filter attached to the Barlow's threaded barrel, you can change eyepieces without removing the filter. Use the Barlow to increase magnification for lunar and planetary detail when seeing is steady.
For best results use the 3x Barlow with high-quality eyepieces and during nights of stable seeing; avoid unnecessarily high magnification on faint deep-sky targets where image brightness and contrast will suffer.
