The EHEIM Coarse/foam filter pad is a replacement foam insert designed for use in compatible external aquarium filters. Supplied in a pack of five, each pad provides mechanical filtration by trapping larger particles and supporting initial biological colonization. Made to EHEIM standards in Germany, the foam pads are intended for models such as professionel 3 250/350/600 and professionel 3e 350 and fit into designated media compartments to maintain clear water flow and protect downstream filter media.
The coarse foam material captures debris and particulate waste before it reaches finer media, reducing clogging and extending the life of carbon or fine mechanical layers. Its open-cell structure promotes water flow while offering surface area for beneficial bacteria to establish. Supplied as a set of five, the pads allow staged replacement or parallel use for phased maintenance cycles.
Rinse each foam pad briefly with aquarium water before first installation to remove any loose particles from manufacture. Place the pad in the mechanical media compartment of the compatible external filter according to the filter manufacturer’s layout, ensuring correct orientation for water flow. Replace or clean foam pads during routine filter maintenance: remove and rinse in aquarium water (not tap water) to preserve beneficial bacteria, and replace pads when damaged, excessively compressed, or when they no longer clean effectively.
For best results, use these coarse foam pads as the first mechanical layer in a multi-stage filtration system. Schedule inspections during regular maintenance to determine whether cleaning or replacement is required, and combine with finer mechanical and chemical media as needed to achieve desired water clarity and biological balance.
