Passepartout mat by focus — black with black core for 20x30 outer / 15x20 inner

Focus passepartout mat in black with a black core, sized for a 20x30 cm outer frame and a 15x20 cm inner opening. The mat creates a neutral, high-contrast border between the framed object and the frame, protecting edges and improving visual focus on photos, prints, certificates or small works on paper. It is produced to standard dimensions for common frames and fits museum-style presentations as well as domestic displays.

Advantages

This passepartout mat offers a consistent black surface and a matching black core that reduces light bleed and draws attention inward toward the artwork. Its precise cut accommodates a 15x20 cm image while providing a 20x30 cm outer size, making it compatible with widely available frames. The black-on-black finish provides a modern, understated look and helps hide minor mounting or trimming imperfections along the edge of the image.

Suitable for

• Framing 15x20 cm photographs or prints in a 20x30 cm frame
• Presenting certificates, small posters or limited-edition prints
• Gallery displays and home interiors where a dark, neutral border is preferred
• Matting artworks on paper that require edge protection and visual separation from the frame

When it may not be suitable

This black passepartout may not be suitable when a light or colored border is required to complement specific tones in an image or to create a brighter presentation. For oversized, textured, or mounted objects that exceed the 15x20 cm inner aperture or have substantial depth, a custom mat or shadowbox frame may be necessary.

Key specifications

• Outer dimensions: 20 x 30 cm
• Inner opening (visible image area): 15 x 20 cm
• Color: black surface with black core
• Material: rigid matboard suitable for framing (acid-free properties not specified)
• Cut: pre-cut rectangular aperture centered for standard placement

How to use

Place the image or print behind the pre-cut opening so the visible area aligns with the 15x20 cm aperture. Secure the artwork to the backboard with acid-free tape or photo corners if conservation is required; otherwise, use standard mounting methods appropriate for the framed item. Insert the assembled mat and artwork into a 20x30 cm frame, ensuring the mat sits flush and the core edge faces outward to create a clean visual separation.

What to consider before purchase

• Confirm frame internal dimensions are 20x30 cm to ensure a correct fit
• Verify the visible image size needed is 15x20 cm before selecting this mat
• Consider whether an acid-free or archival-grade matboard is required for long-term preservation
• Check that a black border complements the colors and tone of the artwork or photo

Usage recommendations

For clean presentation, center the artwork precisely and use corner mounts or archival hinges if preservation is important. When hanging, pair the black passepartout with a frame that provides a slight contrast in finish or thickness to enhance depth perception and keep the display dust-free by sealing the frame backing.
