Internal 2.5" HGST Hitachi CinemaStar Z5K500 500GB 5400RPM SATA II 8MB HDD
HGST Hitachi CinemaStar Z5K500 is a 2.5-inch internal hard drive with 500 GB capacity, 5400 RPM spindle speed and 8 MB cache. Designed for compact systems, this SATA II drive targets laptops, slim desktops, set-top boxes and media devices where low power consumption, quiet operation and compatibility with digital video workflows are important. The 7 mm slim profile allows it to fit in thinner chassis and to replace standard 9.5 mm drives in many installations.
The CinemaStar Z5K500 combines a 500 GB capacity with 5400 RPM rotational speed and an 8 MB buffer to provide balanced storage for media and general-purpose use. Advanced Format (4K physical sector size) improves raw capacity efficiency and error correction capabilities. The drive includes features tailored for audio/visual and video storage applications, such as streaming support and time-limited error recovery, while offering low acoustic noise and reduced power draw suitable for always-on devices.
This drive runs at 5400 RPM and has an 8 MB cache, which is appropriate for media and everyday storage but may not meet performance expectations for heavy-duty workstation tasks, high-frequency database transactions, or applications requiring sustained high I/O throughput. It also uses the SATA II interface; systems that require SATA III bandwidth or NVMe performance will see limited interface speeds with this drive.
Install the drive into a compatible 2.5" bay or adapter, ensuring the 7 mm height fits the enclosure or caddy. Connect power and SATA data cables (or the laptop's internal SATA connector) and secure the drive mechanically. Initialize and partition the drive in the operating system, then format with the desired file system for your use case (for example NTFS for Windows-based DVRs or ext4 for Linux systems). For media devices, follow device-specific installation procedures and ensure firmware or software supports Advanced Format drives if required.
For best results in video and media applications, use the CinemaStar Z5K500 in systems where sustained sequential write/read operations are common (such as DVR recording or playback). Enable any available device-level streaming or time-limited error recovery features in your system firmware, schedule periodic health checks via SMART monitoring, and ensure your enclosure provides adequate vibration damping to preserve drive reliability over time.
