Product information

Description

Mentor Mackie HM-800 Black is a rack-mount headphone amplifier engineered for monitoring and playback in studios, live sound booths and broadcast environments. The unit provides low distortion monitoring with a THD of 0.005% and a clean noise floor with a signal-to-noise ratio of −67 dB. Housed in a compact 19" chassis, the HM-800 features a 6.3 mm headphone output and high input impedance to preserve source signal integrity. It is mains powered (220–240 V, 50–60 Hz) and includes the AC cable for immediate installation.

Advantages

The HM-800 delivers precise headphone monitoring thanks to its very low total harmonic distortion and solid signal-to-noise performance, ensuring accurate reproduction for critical listening and cueing. Its 6.3 mm output and high input impedance make it compatible with a wide range of headphone models and professional line-level sources. The 19" rackable form factor and compact depth allow straightforward integration into studio racks and live setups while conserving space.

Suitable for

  • Multitrack and project studios requiring reliable headphone distribution
  • Live sound booths and FOH setups for cue mixes and monitoring
  • Broadcast and post-production monitoring that demands low distortion
  • Practice rooms and rehearsal spaces needing compact rack-mounted monitoring

Key specifications

  • Total harmonic distortion (THD): 0.005%
  • Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR): −67 dB
  • Input impedance: 40 kΩ
  • Headphone output connector: 6.3 mm (1/4")
  • Power: AC 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz
  • Chassis dimensions: 483 × 224 × 46 mm
  • Included accessories: AC power cable

How to use

Install the HM-800 into a standard 19" rack space and secure it using the front mounting ears. Connect line-level sources to the amplifier's inputs and plug headphones into the 6.3 mm output jack. Apply mains power using the supplied AC cable and set the unit's output level to a conservative starting position before adjusting to the desired listening level. For multi-user setups, verify individual levels and balances to avoid excessive volumes and ensure consistent monitoring across users.

Usage recommendations

For consistent and noise-free monitoring, use low-noise balanced line sources when available and avoid running audio and power cables in parallel over long distances. When integrating into an existing rack, leave adequate ventilation space and position the HM-800 near other monitoring equipment for convenient access to headphone outputs.

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): Total harmonic distortion is a measure of non-linear harmonic distortion and is given in %. Non-linear harmonic distortions are signals which were not present in the original before the signal was converted by the headphones. These unwanted signals are caused by the diaphragm, whose movements do not precisely move in time with the electric signals that cause it to move. Unfortunately, this is a feature of all electroacoustic transducers. Although it cannot be completely eliminated, suitable steps can be taken to minimise it. However, the user is not interested in why this distortion takes place but in how great the level of distortion must be for it to become perceptible. According to the findings of several research projects, a total harmonic distortion of 1% in the frequency range of 100 to 2000 Hz is imperceptible. Below 100 Hz, the perceptibility threshold lies at 10%.
