Firestarter Morakniv PinPac (model 11859) — compact ferrocerium fire striker by Morakniv
Morakniv PinPac is a compact ferrocerium fire striker designed for reliable spark generation in outdoor and survival situations. This handheld fire starter produces hot sparks that reach approximately 3000 °C, allowing ignition of tinder, kindling or gas burners in wet or cold conditions. The unit is durable and reusable, with an estimated life of up to 7000 strikes when used as intended. Before first use, scrape off the protective coating on the steel rod to expose the ferrocerium surface.
The Morakniv PinPac offers a small, easy-to-carry form factor suited to pockets, survival kits and backpack compartments. Its ferrocerium rod generates intense, high-temperature sparks capable of lighting damp materials and resisting adverse weather. The striker is mechanically simple, requires no fuel or matches, and can also serve as an emergency signaling source or to ignite stoves and gas grills. Reusability and a long stroke life make it a practical choice for repeated outdoor use.
This fire striker is not an all-in-one fire kit: it does not include tinder, fire-starting gels or fuel. Users should bring appropriate tinder and practice proper fire safety. The protective coating on the steel rod must be removed before use, which requires a scraping action and may be inconvenient for users who expect instant readiness without preparation.
Before first use, remove the protective coating from the steel rod by scraping it off with a knife or similar tool. To generate sparks, hold the ferrocerium rod steady and pull the specially designed striker blade back firmly and evenly along the rod. Direct the sparks toward prepared tinder such as dry grass, birch bark, cotton tinder or char cloth. Repeat the scraping action until embers form, then transfer embers to a tinder bundle and blow gently to establish a flame. Practice the technique in a safe, controlled environment before relying on it in an emergency.
Store the PinPac dry and accessible within your kit. Keep spare tinder and practice striking technique before heading into remote areas. Use the striker as part of a layered fire-starting strategy—combine with prepared tinder, char cloth or an alternative ignition source for best reliability.
