HDD/SSD enclosure OWC ThunderBay 4 4 drives 2.5/3.5" USB Type-C
The OWC ThunderBay 4 is a 4-bay HDD/SSD enclosure designed to accept both 2.5" and 3.5" drives without adapters. It provides high-throughput connectivity via USB Type-C and supports multi-drive configurations including JBOD and hot-swap operation. Engineered for sustained data transfer performance and reliable cooling, the ThunderBay 4 is suitable for expanding local storage capacity, managing large media files, and building software-managed RAID arrays when paired with RAID software.
The enclosure supports up to four drives and allows mixing 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs and SSDs for flexible performance and capacity combinations. With USB Type-C connectivity and up to 40 Gbit/s interface capability, the unit offers high data throughput. A thermally efficient flow‑through vented chassis with an oversized low‑turbulence fan and vibration-dampening feet keeps drives cool and reduces resonance during sustained use. Hot-swap support and JBOD mode make drive maintenance and capacity expansion straightforward.
Install 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives into the four drive bays following the device's insertion guidance, secure as required, then connect the enclosure to your host computer using the included cable or a compatible USB Type-C/Thunderbolt cable. Configure drives individually as independent volumes (JBOD) or use external RAID management software to create and manage RAID arrays. For systems requiring advanced RAID features, install and configure compatible software RAID utilities on the host computer before assembling production workflows.
For reliable long-term operation, use drives of the same capacity and performance characteristics when building RAID volumes, ensure adequate airflow around the enclosure, and verify drive health regularly with diagnostic tools. When using high-throughput workflows, connect to a host port that supports the enclosure's maximum link speed and consider using SSDs or mixed SSD/HDD configurations for optimal performance.
