PCIe Interface Card OWC Mercury Helios 3S
The OWC Mercury Helios 3S is an external PCIe enclosure that connects to Thunderbolt 3-equipped computers to provide a single, full-featured PCIe slot. It supports full-height and half-length expansion cards and delivers active cooling and up to 150W power to installed cards. The enclosure is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.13–10.15.3 and measures 143 mm × 233 mm × 82 mm, making it suitable for adding professional video capture, audio processing, storage, or high-speed networking to laptops and compact desktops that lack internal PCIe slots.
Mercury Helios 3S adds a standard PCIe slot via Thunderbolt 3, enabling use of pro-level PCIe cards with space-constrained systems. It supports a broad range of half-length and full-height single- or double-width cards, provides active cooling and up to 150W of card power, and offers dual 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connectivity with backward compatibility. The unit is plug-and-play with no special drivers required for typical workflows and allows daisy-chaining of additional Thunderbolt peripherals while supplying up to 85W notebook charging.
Remove the two thumb screws on the enclosure, insert a compatible PCIe card into the internal slot, secure the card and replace the thumb screws. Connect the Mercury Helios 3S to a Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer with the included Thunderbolt cable. The device is recognized automatically in supported operating systems; install any vendor drivers required by the specific PCIe card. Optionally daisy-chain additional Thunderbolt peripherals or connect a DisplayPort monitor and charge a compatible notebook from the enclosure.
For best results, use cards that meet the supported physical dimensions (half-length or full-height) and power limits. Ensure your host system runs a compatible OS version, and verify vendor drivers for specialized cards (video capture, audio interfaces, network adapters) are up to date. Allow airflow around the enclosure for effective cooling during sustained high-performance use.
