HDD/SSD enclosure OWC ThunderBay 4 Black — 4 bays, 2.5/3.5", SATA I/II/III, 20 Gbit/s, USB-C
OWC ThunderBay 4 is a black, four-bay HDD/SSD enclosure that accepts both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives (SATA I/II/III). Designed for external multi-drive storage, it connects via USB-C and supports up to 20 Gbit/s transfer speed. The enclosure operates as JBOD, enabling independent use of each drive or the ability to create multi-drive arrays with user-selected software RAID solutions. Its enclosure cooling uses a flow-through vented design and an oversized low-noise fan to maintain drive temperatures during sustained workloads.
The ThunderBay 4 combines a four-bay capacity with a compact external form factor, allowing straightforward expansion of storage for backups, media libraries, and project scratch disks. Support for both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives provides flexibility in choosing SSDs or HDDs to match performance and capacity needs. USB-C connectivity at up to 20 Gbit/s offers high-throughput data transfer for large files and real-time media workflows, while the JBOD mode and compatibility with third-party RAID software let users configure the unit to their workflow requirements.
Install up to four 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives into the bays following the enclosure's mounting procedure, then connect the unit to your computer using the USB-C cable. The ThunderBay 4 presents each drive to the host system in JBOD mode by default; you can use the operating system's disk utility or third-party RAID software to initialize, format, or configure software RAID arrays as needed. Ensure drives are securely seated and the enclosure has adequate airflow during operation.
Place the ThunderBay 4 on a stable, flat surface with at least a few centimeters of clearance for airflow. For workflows that demand higher throughput or redundancy, configure drives with compatible software RAID on the host computer. Regularly monitor drive temperatures and health with appropriate utilities, and maintain current backups when using multi-drive configurations.
