The OWC Express 1M2 is a portable M.2 SSD enclosure available pre-built with OWC Aura SSDs or as a DIY solution for user-supplied NVMe M.2 drives. Supporting 2230, 2242, and 2280 form factors and USB4/USB-C connectivity, this silver aluminum enclosure is designed for high sustained transfer speeds (up to 3151 MB/s on compatible systems), broad compatibility with modern Macs and PCs, and reliable thermal management through an integrated aluminum heat sink.
The Express 1M2 provides high transfer rates enabled by USB4, secure screw-together construction, and a solid aluminum housing that helps prevent thermal throttling during long or intensive transfers. It supports drives up to 8.0TB today (and is architected for larger future capacities), works cross-platform with additional software support for mac/PC interchange, and is available either as a ready-to-run OWC solution or an enclosure for your chosen NVMe drive.
For a ready-to-run solution, plug the pre-installed OWC Aura SSD into a USB4/USB-C port on a compatible Mac or PC; the product ships preformatted in APFS for immediate use with macOS and iPadOS. For the DIY option, open the enclosure using the included screws, install an NVMe M.2 2230/2242/2280 SSD, reassemble the enclosure securely, and connect it to your host using the supplied USB-C cable. If using on Windows systems, install OWC MacDrive or format the drive to a Windows-compatible file system as required.
To maintain consistent peak performance avoid prolonged operation in confined, poorly ventilated spaces; ensure your host supports USB4 for maximum speeds and use compatible high-quality NVMe M.2 SSDs. Keep the enclosure screwed together to preserve thermal contact with the aluminum heat sink and follow manufacturer instructions when installing or changing drives.
