Proline 77690 is a single high-speed steel (HSS) metal drill bit with a 9 mm diameter and an overall length of 320 mm. Engineered for drilling through metal, non-ferrous alloys and plastics, this extra-long, fully ground bit offers straightness and accuracy for through-holes, mounting tasks and workshop applications. The straight shank fits standard chucks on handheld drills and drill presses, making it suitable for fabrication, installation and maintenance work where a long reach is required.
The drill features a 135° point angle with chamfering adjustment that facilitates faster centring and reduces wander during start-up, improving drilling speed and precision. Fully ground flutes ensure high rectilinearity and consistent hole quality, while the refined HSS material provides durability and resistance to wear in metalworking tasks. The extra length allows access to deeper or recessed holes without extensions.
Select an appropriate drill speed and use cutting fluid when drilling into steel or other metals to reduce heat and prolong tool life. Secure the workpiece and, where possible, use a centre punch or pilot mark to prevent walking. Fit the straight shank into a properly tightened chuck on a handheld drill or drill press and apply steady, even pressure; for deeper holes allow the bit to clear chips regularly. For improved accuracy when required, use drill bushes or an alignment jig.
For best results, start at a lower RPM to establish the hole, then increase speed as the bit advances. Apply cutting fluid for metalworking, avoid excessive side loads, and clear chips frequently when drilling deep holes to maintain straightness and extend bit life.
