The RAIDSONIC ICY BOX IB-256WP is a 2.5" HDD/SSD USB 3.0 enclosure in black that supports SATA I/II/III (up to 6 Gbit/s) and USB 3.0 host transfer rates up to 5 Gbit/s. It offers tool-free installation for 2.5" drives up to 15 mm height and is compatible with common PC and Mac systems. The aluminium housing with a silicone sleeve provides passive cooling and additional slip protection, while an LED indicates power and drive access.

Advantages

The IB-256WP includes a mechanical write-protection switch to prevent accidental deletion or modification of data, functioning similarly to an SD card write-lock. Its fanless aluminium design enables silent operation and improved heat dissipation. The enclosure supports UASP for faster USB 3.0 transfers when used with compatible hosts and provides plug & play and HotSwap convenience for quick drive access.

How to use

Open the enclosure and insert a 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD (up to 15 mm height) into the SATA connector, then close the enclosure. Connect the enclosure to a PC or Mac using the supplied USB 3.0 Type-A to Micro-B cable. The device is plug & play and will be powered via USB; use HotSwap to connect or remove drives while the host supports it. To enable read-only protection, slide the write-protection switch on the rear to the locked position; to write to the drive again, switch it back to the unlocked position.

Usage recommendations

For optimal transfer performance, connect to a USB 3.0 port on the host and enable UASP if the operating system and host controller support it. Use the write-protection switch when sharing or inspecting drives that may contain malware to prevent accidental modification. Avoid exposing the aluminium enclosure to prolonged moisture and handle the drive insert/remove processes on a stable surface to reduce risk of accidental drops.
