Microphone Sennheiser e 604
The Sennheiser e 604 is a compact dynamic instrument microphone designed primarily for drums and brass. Its reinforced glass-fibre body and integral clip-on mount make it robust and easy to position for live and studio use. The microphone delivers a focused sound with a slight emphasis in the upper mids and highs, high sound-pressure handling and low distortion, making it suitable for close-miked toms, snares and wind instruments. Technical outline: 40–18000 Hz; capsule Ø 33 mm, length 59 mm; weight 60 g; cardioid pickup, wired XLR-3 connection; black finish.
The e 604 combines a rugged reinforced glass-fibre body with low sensitivity to impact and handling noise, providing reliable stage performance. It tolerates very high sound pressure levels and produces low distortion while a hum-compensating coil reduces unwanted interference. Its compact design and integral stand/clip mount allow fast, precise positioning close to the sound source.
Attach the e 604 quickly using the integral clip-on mount directly to the drum rim or to a suitable stand adapter. Position the capsule close to the drum head or instrument bell for a direct and present sound; for toms and snares place it near the rim aimed toward the centre of the head, and for brass or woodwind point it toward the bell. Connect to a mixing console or preamp using an XLR-3 cable and adjust gain to avoid clipping while preserving transient detail.
For live applications, set a modest high-pass filter if stage rumble is present, and use conservative gain staging to handle the high SPL. For studio tracking, experiment with capsule distance and angle to balance attack and body; the e 604 responds well to close placement for attack and to slight off-axis positioning for a warmer tone.
