The StarTech.com 2-Bay M.2 NVMe SSD PCIe x8 Hot-Swap Tool-less backplane (MPN: 2M2-REMOVABLE-PCIE) provides two removable M.2 NVMe drive bays using an available PCIe x8 or larger expansion slot. It supports M-Key M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 and enables direct PCIe connectivity without on-board chipsets or adapters, preserving full performance for each drive.

Advantages

Tool-less installation lets you insert or remove M.2 NVMe drives without tools, while the latching, lockable drive trays (two keys included) add physical security. Each bay can deliver up to 64 Gbps per drive when used in a compatible PCIe slot with bifurcation. The unit uses a vented stainless steel frame and tray, thermal pads, an aluminum cover, active cooling fans, and anti-vibration springs to maintain reliable thermal and mechanical performance.

How to use

Insert the tray into the bay for hot-swap access. Ensure your system BIOS/UEFI is configured for PCIe bifurcation so the OS can read and write to multiple drives simultaneously.

Usage recommendations

Use this backplane only with M.2 NVMe (PCIe) drives — M.2 SATA drives are not supported. Confirm your motherboard supports PCIe bifurcation and review BIOS/UEFI settings before installation. For best thermal performance, ensure adequate chassis airflow and periodically check that the fans and thermal pads remain unobstructed. Additional drive trays (TR-M2-REMOVABLE-PCIE) are available separately if you need spares.
