The StarTech.com 4 Bay Thunderbolt 3 NVMe enclosure (M2E4BTB3) converts four M-Key PCIe M.2 NVMe or AHCI SSDs into a single high-performance external storage solution. The self-powered enclosure includes a 72W EPS power supply that powers the unit, the installed drives, and provides up to 15W to downstream Thunderbolt 3 devices. A 2.3 ft (70 cm) Thunderbolt 3 certified host cable is included for connection to your computer.

Advantages

This enclosure delivers up to 40 Gbps aggregate bandwidth over Thunderbolt 3 and dedicates an 8 Gbps PCIe lane to each M.2 drive to ensure consistent per-drive performance. The vented metal chassis with thermal pads and an active cooling fan helps maintain optimal SSD temperatures. Thunderbolt certification ensures broad compatibility with Thunderbolt 3 hosts and forward compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 devices. How to use

Install up to four 80 mm M-Key PCIe M.2 SSDs into the enclosure following the included installation guide. Connect the enclosure to a Thunderbolt 3 host using the supplied 70 cm Thunderbolt 3 cable and attach the included 72W EPS power supply. Configure drives individually or set up software RAID using your OS tools (Storage Spaces on Windows, RAID Assistant on macOS, mdadm/mdraid on Linux). If required, connect a DisplayPort monitor to the enclosure and/or daisy-chain additional Thunderbolt 3 devices via the downstream TB3 port.

Usage recommendations

Use PCIe-based M-Key M.2 NVMe or AHCI SSDs (80 mm). Do not install SATA (B-Key or M+B Key) M.2 drives. When using downstream devices, be aware they share bandwidth with the SSDs and may reduce overall transfer performance. Apple M1 systems support only one external display through the enclosure; Intel and M1 Pro/Max Macs can support dual displays.
