Internal PCIe interface card adapter Synology M2D20 — PCIe host/output, full-height/low-profile, 181.9×71.8×15.8 mm
Synology M2D20 is an internal PCIe interface card adapter that adds M.2 NVMe SSD connectivity to compatible NAS and server systems. The card accepts two M.2 2280/22110 NVMe drives and installs in a PCIe slot to provide high-speed local storage expansion, caching or direct NVMe integration without occupying 3.5" drive bays. The adapter supports both full-height and low-profile form factors and measures 181.9 × 71.8 × 15.8 mm, making it suitable for varied chassis designs.
The M2D20 increases random and sequential I/O bandwidth by leveraging NVMe performance through a PCIe interface, which improves responsiveness for latency-sensitive tasks such as virtualization, database operations and large-scale file indexing. With two M.2 slots, it enables flexible storage configurations including tiered caching or RAID-capable NVMe pools when supported by the host system. Its dual form-factor bracket allows installation in full-height or low-profile systems without additional hardware.
Power down the host system and then install the Synology M2D20 into an available PCIe slot following the host manufacturer’s service instructions. Secure the card with the appropriate bracket (full-height or low-profile) and mount NVMe SSDs into the two M.2 slots using the supplied standoffs or screws. After hardware installation, power on the system and configure the SSDs in the host operating system or NAS management interface to create caches, volumes or NVMe pools according to the platform’s storage management procedures.
Use enterprise- or data-center-grade NVMe SSDs for sustained performance and longevity in heavy workloads. Verify compatibility with your NAS or server model and firmware version before installation. For caching use cases, follow the NAS vendor’s recommended cache size and configuration to balance performance gains against available capacity.
