TracoPower TRN 3-1212 is a compact 3 W DC-DC converter designed for applications requiring a regulated 12 V output from a 9–18 V DC input. The module delivers up to 250 mA in a cubical package measuring 8 × 12.1 × 11.9 mm, offering a small footprint suitable for embedded systems, industrial control, instrumentation and other low-power electronics. The converter belongs to the TRN 3 series which provides full regulation, wide 2:1 input range operation and reliable full-load performance up to 65°C ambient temperature.
The TRN 3-1212 provides a stable fixed 12 V output with short-circuit protection and no minimum load requirement, which simplifies integration. Its high isolation rating (1600 VDC I/O) meets IEC/EN 62368-1 test requirements and supports galvanic isolation between input and output. The small 1 cm³ package saves board space while delivering fully regulated performance and a wide input voltage range for tolerance to supply variations.
Connect the converter input to a stable DC source within the 9–18 V range, observing correct polarity. Provide adequate PCB mounting or mechanical fixation for the small cubical package to ensure reliable thermal contact and mechanical stability. The TRN 3-1212 does not require a minimum output load for regulation; however, follow the manufacturer's layout and grounding recommendations to preserve isolation and minimize noise. Ensure the output is connected only to circuits rated for a 12 V supply and limited to the 250 mA maximum output current.
Allow for sufficient clearance and thermal dissipation on the PCB when operating near the upper ambient limit (up to 65°C). Use appropriate input filtering and transient protection on the supply side if the converter is exposed to harsh or noisy environments. Verify isolation requirements in your application and test under actual operating conditions to ensure compliance with safety standards.
