Rangefinder Lens Voigtlander APO Lanthar 50 mm f/2.0 for Leica M

The Voigtlander APO Lanthar 50 mm f/2.0 for Leica M is a compact, rangefinder-compatible 50mm prime lens designed for photographers using Leica M-mount bodies. With an f/2.0 maximum aperture and apochromatic correction, the lens is engineered to deliver sharp images with minimized chromatic aberration and controlled color fringing. The physical design balances a small footprint with solid build quality, making it suitable for everyday shooting where accuracy of rendering and color fidelity are important.

Advantages

The apochromatic optical design reduces secondary color fringing and improves sharpness across the frame, particularly at wider apertures. A fast f/2.0 aperture provides a balance between low-light capability and compactness, allowing subject isolation and faster shutter speeds. Compatibility with Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras ensures precise focusing and a traditional manual control experience. Its compact dimensions and lightweight construction make it easy to carry for street, travel, and documentary photography.

Suitable for

• Portrait photography with natural perspective and subject separation
• Street and documentary photography requiring discreet, compact gear
• General-purpose everyday photography on Leica M bodies
• Low-light shooting where a relatively fast aperture is beneficial

Key specifications

• Focal length: 50 mm standard prime
• Maximum aperture: f/2.0
• Optical design: apochromatic correction for reduced chromatic aberration
• Mount type: Leica M-compatible rangefinder mount
• Focus type: manual focus optimized for rangefinder coupling
• Typical use: portrait, street, general-purpose photography

How to use

Mount the lens on a Leica M-mount camera using the lens mount and engage the camera’s rangefinder coupling for accurate manual focusing. Compose using the camera’s viewfinder and focus by aligning rangefinder images; adjust aperture on the lens to control depth of field and exposure. For low-light or shallow depth-of-field effects, use the f/2.0 aperture; stop down for increased depth of field and maximum sharpness. Handle focusing and aperture adjustments manually and pair the lens with a camera body that supports Leica M-rangefinder calibration for best results.

Usage recommendations

Use the lens for scenes where color accuracy and minimized chromatic aberration matter, such as portraits and high-contrast edges. When shooting wide open, check focus carefully due to the shallow depth of field. For critical landscape or studio work requiring maximum resolution across the frame, stop down to mid apertures. The compact size makes it practical for carry during travel or street sessions; consider using a lens hood or careful angle selection to reduce flare in strong directional light.
