The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter enables connection of Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices — for example external hard drives, Thunderbolt docks and Thunderbolt-enabled displays — to any Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) / USB4 port on a Mac. It is a bidirectional adapter, so it also allows connecting Thunderbolt 3 devices to Macs that have a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port running macOS Sierra or later. Note that some legacy displays require an external power source when used through this adapter.
This adapter supports bidirectional data and device compatibility between Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2, preserving Thunderbolt performance where supported. It lets you reuse existing Thunderbolt peripherals with newer Macs and connect certain Thunderbolt displays. The adapter is compact and designed for straightforward plug-and-play use with compatible macOS versions.
Connect the adapter to a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) / USB4 port on your Mac, then plug the Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 device into the adapter. For the reverse direction, attach the Thunderbolt 3 device to the adapter and then connect the adapter to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port running macOS Sierra or later. When connecting a Thunderbolt-enabled display, verify whether the display requires an external power source and provide power if necessary.
Do not use this adapter with DisplayPort-only displays. For the best compatibility, ensure your Mac is running a supported macOS version and that connected devices use Thunderbolt protocol (not just Mini DisplayPort). If a connected display does not receive power through the adapter, use the display’s power supply.
