Step drill AWTools 1077295 M2-TiAlN 4–45 mm is a single-flute stepped drill designed for progressive hole enlargement in sheet metal, thin steel and non-ferrous materials. Made from M2 high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, this tool covers a diameter range from 4 mm up to 45 mm in a single shank, allowing sequential drilling of multiple hole sizes without tool changes. The stepped geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces the tendency to grab or snatch during cutting; the tool is compatible with corded and cordless hand drills as well as drill presses used in fabrication, electrical and HVAC tasks.
The M2 high-speed steel core provides hardness and wear resistance suitable for working with thin steel and non-ferrous metals, while the TiAlN surface coating increases heat resistance and extends tool life under elevated cutting temperatures. Single-flute, stepped construction yields smooth enlargement of holes and fast chip removal, reducing burr formation and rework. Using one-step drill for a range of diameters improves productivity by eliminating frequent bit changes and simplifies hole sizing in on-site and workshop environments.
Secure the workpiece firmly and mark the initial pilot position. Use a center punch for accurate starting if necessary. Mount the step drill in the drill chuck so the shank is fully supported and ensure proper alignment. Start drilling at low speed to locate the first step, then increase speed within the recommended range for the material while applying steady axial pressure. Withdraw the bit periodically to clear chips and avoid overheating; apply cutting lubricant when working with steel or stainless materials to extend tool life and improve finish. Progress through the steps to reach the required hole diameter without changing tools.
For best results, use moderate spindle speeds and steady feed pressure appropriate to the material thickness. Apply cutting fluid when drilling steels; for aluminium and soft alloys reduce speed slightly to avoid material smearing. Maintain a stable setup to prevent wobble and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when drilling.
