Drill bit set AWTools Step Spiral M2-TiAlN, set of 3
AWTools Step Spiral M2-TiAlN drill bit set, set of 3 combines stepped hole capability with spiral flute geometry. Each step bit is made from M2 high-speed steel and has a TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) surface coating to increase hardness and resistance to heat and wear. The step design allows drilling a range of diameters with a single tool, while spiral flutes aid chip evacuation when working with sheet metal and other thin materials.
The TiAlN coating provides improved wear resistance and thermal stability compared with uncoated HSS, extending tool life under higher-speed or intermittent drilling conditions. Spiral flutes promote efficient chip removal and reduce clogging when cutting through metal sheets. Using stepped diameters in one bit reduces tool changes, speeds up repetitive operations, and ensures concentric stepped holes with fewer setups. The M2 high-speed steel substrate balances toughness and hardness for reliable performance in thin metals.
Secure the workpiece and mark the hole center. Mount the appropriate step bit in a drill or drill press with a firmly clamped chuck. Start at low to moderate speed, applying steady axial pressure to allow the stepped edges to cut progressively; adjust feed to maintain smooth cutting and prevent overheating. Withdraw the bit periodically to clear chips from the flutes if necessary. For thicker or harder materials, reduce speed and apply cutting fluid or coolant to extend tool life and improve chip flow.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment, clamp the workpiece, and select drilling speed according to material thickness. For best results on stainless steel or other hard alloys, use lower speeds and cutting fluid. Store bits in a dry place to avoid corrosion and inspect the coating condition before use.
