Drill bit AWTools AW20590 — metal and wood twist drill, standard shank
AWTools AW20590 is a twist drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling and combined drilling-and-tapping in materials such as soft metals, aluminum sheet, plastics, copper, steel and wood. Made of HSS M2 high speed steel with a TiN finish and a fully ground surface, the AW20590 features a standard shank compatible with conventional chucks for use in hand drills and drill presses. The tool combines a self-centering tip with optimized chip removal for accurate hole location and smooth, efficient drilling and threading.
The HSS M2 construction with TiN coating provides wear resistance and heat tolerance for extended tool life under typical workshop and construction use. A fully ground flute and one-step drilling-and-tapping geometry deliver precise cutting of metric right-hand threads and reduce the number of tool changes. The self-centering tip removes the need for pre-punching while the shank size and finish ensure secure clamping in standard chucks.
Secure the AWTools AW20590 in a properly tightened chuck, ensuring the shank is fully seated and concentric. Select an appropriate feed and speed for the material: lower speeds for harder metals and higher speeds for aluminum, plastics and wood. Use steady, moderate pressure to allow the combined drill-and-tap geometry to cut cleanly; avoid excessive force that can cause overheating or premature wear. Clear chips regularly and, when machining metals, apply a suitable cutting fluid to improve finish and tool life. For threaded holes, back the tool slightly to break chips if needed and complete the thread in a controlled single operation.
For best results, choose rotational speed and feed compatible with HSS tools and the workpiece material, clamp work securely, and use coolant or lubricant when drilling metals. Inspect the cutting edges before use and replace the bit when wear degrades hole quality or threading accuracy.
