Telephoto lens Canon RF 85mm F1.4L VCM MILC 14 elements 10 groups
The Canon RF 85mm F1.4L VCM is a high-performance 85mm telephoto prime lens for MILC (mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras), designed for hybrid shooters who work with both stills and video. Featuring L-series optics, a fast f/1.4 aperture and advanced coatings, it delivers sharp portraits with smooth background blur, reliable weather sealing and a compact, lightweight design compared with larger 85mm L-class lenses.
This lens offers a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture and an 11-blade iris for soft, pleasing bokeh and strong low-light capability. Optical construction with 14 elements in 10 groups, including aspherical and UD elements plus advanced coatings such as Air Sphere and Super Spectra, ensures high resolution and reduced flare. Fast VCM autofocus provides precise, quiet focusing with minimal focus breathing for video, while a dedicated Iris Ring and customizable control ring support smooth manual aperture and exposure control for filmmakers. L-series build quality, fluorine coating and weather seals provide durability in demanding conditions.
Mount the lens on a compatible Canon RF-mount mirrorless camera. Use the f/1.4 aperture to achieve shallow depth of field for portraits; stop down as needed for greater depth of field. For video, engage the dedicated Iris Ring for smooth aperture changes and use the VCM AF for quiet continuous focusing. Assign functions to the customizable Lens Control Ring or Lens Function Button via the camera menu to suit your workflow. Maintain a minimum subject distance of 0.75 m for reliable focus.
For the best portrait results, position your subject at a moderate distance (often 1.5–3 m) to benefit from the 85mm compression and use the wide f/1.4 aperture to separate the subject from the background. Use a lens hood and the fluorine-coated front element to help repel moisture and smudges when shooting outdoors.
