Step drill bit DeWalt DT5027 6–18 mm, tapered HSS for metal and plastic
Step drill bit DeWalt DT5027 6–18 mm, tapered HSS for metal and plastic
DeWalt DT5027 step drill bit covers a 6–18 mm drilling range in a single tapered HSS body, intended for progressive enlargement of holes in sheet metal, thin steel, aluminum and various plastics. The single-flute profile and tapered geometry enable stepwise cutting from small to larger diameters without changing tools, suitable for both portable hand drills and drill presses used in electrical, HVAC, automotive and general workshop tasks.
The high-speed steel (HSS) construction offers durability and heat resistance for extended cutting life when working with thin metals and plastics. The tapered stepped design provides smooth transitions between diameters, reducing burr formation and minimizing the need for deburring. The single-flute profile efficiently evacuates chips, improving cutting stability and reducing clogging during continuous drilling operations.
Secure the workpiece and mark the center point for the required hole size. Fit the step drill bit into a drill chuck and tighten securely. Start drilling at low speed to establish the initial pilot contact, then increase speed as appropriate for the material. Apply steady, moderate pressure and allow the single-flute design to remove chips; periodically retract slightly to clear debris when drilling thicker sections. After reaching the desired step diameter, reduce speed before withdrawing the bit to minimize burring.
Use appropriate cutting lubricant when drilling thicker steel or stainless materials to reduce heat and extend tool life. Wear eye protection and secure thin sheet materials with clamps to prevent vibration. For repeatable hole sizes, mark steps on the radiused edge or use a depth stop on a drill press.
