Description

The DrayTek Vigor 166 modem enables connection to G.fast and VDSL networks and is designed for full performance with Ultrafast and Superfast FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) broadband services. It operates as a full-bridge modem out of the box, pre-configured for most UK DSL connections so that an Ethernet-based firewall or router can be connected without modifying modem settings.

Advantages

Support for Vectoring, G.INP and VDSL2 35b SuperVectoring ensures compatibility with current UK VDSL and G.fast infrastructure. The modem includes two Gigabit LAN ports to provide Internet connectivity while allowing a second device—such as a laptop—to access the modem web interface without interrupting the connection. It is pre-set for UK networks (including Openreach VLAN tag) so no modem setup is required for most ISPs. The device also supports IPTV and ISP video services such as YouView and Sky Q without additional configuration.

How to use

Connect the Vigor 166 to your telephone line for G.fast or VDSL service and attach your Ethernet router or firewall to a LAN port. For most UK ISPs the modem is ready to use out of the box; it passes the ISP connection through in full-bridge mode, or you can switch to Router mode and enter ISP credentials or use DHCP where required. Use the second LAN port to access the modem web interface for status and settings without disrupting the routed device. When paired with a DrayTek Vigor router, the modem reports DSL status to the router for centralized monitoring.

Recommendations

Install the Vigor 166 in a well-ventilated location and use the supplied wall mount fittings and drill pattern for secure mounting. If your ISP requires login credentials, have them ready when switching the modem to Router mode; otherwise leave the device in full-bridge mode to allow your existing router or firewall to manage the connection.
