Description

The DrayTek Vigor 166 modem provides a simple way to connect Ethernet-based routers or firewalls to G.fast and VDSL broadband, supporting Ultrafast and Superfast FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) services. The modem operates as a full-bridge out of the box and is pre-configured for typical UK DSL settings, enabling transparent passthrough of the ISP connection without extra configuration on the modem itself.

Advantages

The Vigor 166 supports Vectoring, G.INP and VDSL2 35b SuperVectoring for full compatibility with current UK VDSL and G.fast networks. It includes two Gigabit LAN ports, allowing a second device (for example a laptop) to access the modem web interface without interrupting the main Internet connection. The modem can function as a pure bridged device or switched to NAT Router mode to provide NAT, port forwarding and DMZ host features. It is compatible with IPTV and ISP video-on-demand services such as YouView and Sky Q with no additional modem configuration, and is supplied pre-set for UK networks including the Openreach VLAN tag.

How to use

Plug the Vigor 166 into the telephone line and connect your Ethernet router or firewall to one of the Gigabit LAN ports. For most UK connections the modem will work immediately as a full-bridge and pass the ISP connection through to your router; alternatively enter your ISP PPPoE username and password or enable DHCP if required by the ISP. Use the second LAN port to access the modem web interface for status checks or adjustments without disrupting the routed Internet connection. Switch to Router mode in the web interface only if you want the Vigor 166 to handle NAT, firewall or PPPoE authentication directly.

Recommendations

The Vigor 166 is intended for use in the UK; leave it in full-bridge mode when using an external router or firewall for routing and security. Use Router mode only if you require the modem itself to perform NAT or PPPoE authentication. Follow the included drill pattern and wall fittings for secure mounting.
