Variable density camera filter Hoya Variable Density II, 5.2 cm filter size, black
HOYA Variable Density II is an adjustable neutral density (ND) filter with an ND range from 1.5 to 9 f-stops (ND3–400). The filter features a rotatable frame with a convenient knob for easier operation and a wider rotatable ring to reduce the risk of vignetting on wide-angle lenses. The product is supplied in black and comes in a single unit with a filter diameter corresponding to the model (example: a 77mm filter can accept an 82mm lens cap due to the frame design).
The HOYA Variable Density II replaces a set of solid ND filters by providing continuous adjustment of light reduction, enabling flexible control over exposure without changing aperture. Its newly designed rotatable frame improves handling and minimizes vignetting on wide-angle lenses. The frame design also allows compatibility with one size larger lens caps than the filter diameter.
Mount the HOYA Variable Density II onto the lens thread matching the filter diameter. Rotate the outer ring using the knob to vary the density from minimum to maximum according to required exposure. For still photography, use the filter to reduce shutter speed for motion blur effects without changing aperture. For video, adjust the filter so shutter speed remains appropriate for the chosen frame rate (typically double the frame rate) to preserve smooth motion. Remove or reduce density when additional light is needed or when vignetting is observed on very wide-angle lenses.
Use the filter to maintain desired shutter speed and aperture settings in bright conditions: reduce exposure to achieve longer shutter times for creative motion blur, or enable wider apertures to decrease depth of field. Check for vignetting at extreme wide angles and, if needed, use the rotatable frame to minimize darkening at the image corners. When storing, keep the filter in its case to protect the optical surfaces and the rotating mechanism.
