Ultraviolet (UV) camera filter Hoya UX UV (PHL)
The Hoya UX UV (PHL) is a 40.5 mm ultraviolet camera filter from Hoya's entry-level UX series, redesigned from the HMC UV(C) filter and now featuring a water-repellent coating. Intended for everyday lens protection, the UX UV filter reduces atmospheric haze and suppresses ultraviolet light that can cause blurred contours or faded, whitish images in seaside or mountainous environments. It is compatible with both film and digital cameras and helps maintain more vivid colours and clearer details.
The new UX UV filter combines a double-sided coating for improved light transmission and reduced reflections with a hydrophobic (water-repellent) finish to ease cleaning and resist water marks. Its slim 40.5 mm design fits the specified lens thread and provides continuous front-element protection while preserving image quality.
Screw the filter onto the front thread of a compatible 40.5 mm lens until secure; avoid overtightening. Keep the filter attached during normal shooting to provide continuous protection and to reduce UV-related haze. If the surface becomes dirty, clean gently with a blower, soft brush or microfibre cloth and, if needed, use a small amount of lens-cleaning solution. Store in a protective case when not in use.
Use the UX UV filter when shooting in outdoor conditions with strong daylight and potential UV haze (coastal or high-altitude locations). Keep the hydrophobic coating effective by cleaning only with appropriate lens-care products and by avoiding abrasive materials.
