RAID controller HP P408i-a SR Gen10 — PCIe x8, 12 Gbit/s, 2048 MB, SAS
RAID controller HP P408i-a SR Gen10 — PCIe x8, 12 Gbit/s, 2048 MB, SAS is an internal server storage controller designed to provide hardware RAID management and high-throughput connectivity for enterprise-class arrays. It connects via a PCIe x8 host interface and supports 12 Gbit/s SAS drives and SATA devices. The controller offers multiple RAID levels and includes 2048 MB of onboard cache to accelerate write and read operations for databases, messaging systems and mixed workload servers.
The controller delivers hardware RAID levels including 0, 1, 1 ADM, 5, 6, 10 ADM, 10, 50 and 60, allowing flexible trade-offs between redundancy and performance. With 2048 MB of onboard cache (flash-backed) it reduces write latency and protects pending writes in case of power loss. Support for 12 Gbit/s SAS lanes and PCIe x8 host interface enables high sustained throughput for multi-drive arrays. Mixed Mode operation permits simultaneous RAID and HBA functions on the same controller, increasing deployment flexibility without additional controllers.
Install the controller into the dedicated internal storage slot of a compatible server and connect SAS or SATA drives to the controller’s internal lanes according to the server wiring. Use the server UEFI storage configuration tool or the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) to create and manage RAID volumes, configure cache settings, and enable any optional features such as secure encryption or SmartCache if licensed. Ensure the controller’s onboard cache is backed by the recommended battery or flash-backup solution where required by your server platform.
For best results, match drive types and performance tiers within a RAID array, enable Flash-Backed Write Cache for write-heavy workloads, and consider using SSDs for caching hot data in mixed SSD/HDD environments. Use the manufacturer’s management utilities to monitor drive health and cache status and follow server vendor guidance for firmware and license options.
