iWARP/RDMA provides low-latency fabric services over Ethernet by using Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA). Key mechanisms such as kernel bypass, direct data placement, and transport acceleration enable efficient memory-to-memory transfers that reduce CPU involvement and improve data center application responsiveness.
Intel® Data Direct I/O Technology (DDIO) reduces I/O latency and increases system I/O bandwidth by allowing adapters and controllers to place data directly into the processor cache instead of routing through system memory. PCI-SIG SR-IOV support and Flexible Port Partitioning enable sharing and partitioning of physical Ethernet resources across multiple virtual machines or processes, improving resource utilization and providing predictable bandwidth allocation. Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq) offload switching work from the hypervisor to the network hardware, lowering virtualization overhead and improving throughput.
Deploy iWARP/RDMA-capable server adapters in the data center network to enable low-latency, zero-copy transfers between servers and storage. Ensure server firmware and OS drivers support Intel DDIO to benefit from cache-directed I/O. Configure SR-IOV and Flexible Port Partitioning in the platform BIOS and hypervisor to expose virtual functions to guest virtual machines, and enable VMDq in the network adapter settings to offload switching tasks from the hypervisor.
Validate that your operating system, hypervisor, and network driver versions fully support iWARP/RDMA, Intel DDIO, SR-IOV, FPP and VMDq before enabling these features in production. Test performance and stability in a controlled environment to confirm expected latency and throughput improvements.
