iWARP/RDMA delivers converged, low-latency fabric services to data centers by enabling Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Ethernet. Key components that reduce latency include Kernel Bypass, Direct Data Placement, and Transport Acceleration. Intel® Data Direct I/O Technology (DDIO) improves I/O data processing efficiency by allowing server adapters and controllers to access processor cache directly, reducing memory detours, lowering latency, increasing system I/O bandwidth, and saving power. The adapter supports PCI-SIG SR-IOV capabilities for native sharing of a single I/O resource among multiple virtual machines. Intel® Ethernet Power Management minimizes idle power and adjusts capacity and power according to demand to improve energy efficiency. Flexible Port Partitioning (FPP) uses SR-IOV to divide a physical Ethernet device into multiple virtual devices, enabling Quality of Service and fair bandwidth allocation. Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq) offload some VMM switching to specialized networking hardware, reducing overhead and improving throughput and system performance.
Provides low-latency RDMA over Ethernet for latency-sensitive workloads. Enhances I/O efficiency through Intel DDIO by reducing memory access overhead and increasing bandwidth. Supports SR-IOV and Flexible Port Partitioning for efficient virtualization and predictable bandwidth allocation. Implements power-saving features with Intel Ethernet Power Management to lower idle consumption and adapt power use to demand. Offloads virtual machine switching tasks with VMDq to reduce host CPU overhead and improve overall throughput.
Integrate the adapter into the server PCIe slot and install vendor drivers that expose iWARP/RDMA and DDIO features to the operating system and hypervisor. Enable SR-IOV and FPP in firmware and host software to create virtual functions for virtual machines. Configure Intel Ethernet Power Management settings through the adapter management utility or operating system power profiles to balance energy efficiency and performance. For virtualized environments, enable VMDq in hypervisor network settings to offload packet switching and improve VM throughput. Verify firmware and driver versions are up to date to ensure compatibility and performance.
Use iWARP/RDMA and DDIO for latency-sensitive applications such as high-performance storage, database clustering, and HPC. Enable SR-IOV/FPP when deploying many VMs that require guaranteed bandwidth per function. Apply power management settings in accordance with workload patterns and test VMDq offload with representative VM traffic to validate performance gains.
