Twist drill bit Irwin 10501922, diameter 5 mm, for metal and wood
Irwin 10501922 is a 5 mm twist drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal and wood and for a wide range of common construction materials. The bit features a spiral flute geometry that removes chips efficiently and a four-facet ground carbide tip that improves centring and reduces required drilling pressure. It is intended for rotary drilling in low-RPM cordless and bench drills and is suitable for through-holes and pilot holes where a precise 5 mm diameter is required.
The four-facet ground carbide tip provides improved centring and lower feed force compared with standard tips, reducing walking at the start of the cut. Spiral flutes promote efficient chip evacuation to maintain cutting performance in both wood and metal. A cylindrical shank ensures stable clamping in most chucks, while the 5 mm diameter offers accuracy for repeatable pilot or through-hole drilling. The twist geometry and carbide tip combination extend usable life in a variety of common materials when used at appropriate speeds.
Fit the cylindrical shank into a compatible chuck and tighten securely. Select a low to medium drill speed appropriate for the material: lower RPM for metal, higher within the cordless low-RPM range for wood and plastics. Use steady, moderate feed pressure and allow the carbide tip to cut without excessive force. Withdraw periodically to clear chips when drilling deeper holes. Do not use with hammer or percussion settings.
Use cutting lubricant or coolant when drilling in thicker or harder metals to prolong bit life and reduce heat. For accurate pilot holes in wood, start with light pressure until the tip centres, then proceed at a consistent feed. Replace the bit when signs of wear or chipping appear on the carbide tip to maintain hole quality.
