Drill bit Irwin 5 mm HSS Pro Series Long (model 10502488)
Irwin 5 mm HSS Pro Series Long is a high-speed steel twist drill designed for metalworking and general-purpose drilling tasks. The extended-length geometry provides increased reach for deeper holes and for working in confined or recessed areas where a standard-length bit would not reach. Constructed from HSS material, the bit offers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance for drilling in steel, iron and a wide range of common metals.
The long design delivers extended reach without the need for extensions or special tooling, enabling precise drilling in deeper or hard-to-access positions. HSS construction ensures reliable cutting performance, good edge retention and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures typical of high-speed drilling. The twist-flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and stable drilling accuracy on metal surfaces.
Secure the workpiece and select an appropriate drill speed for the material being drilled—lower speeds for harder metals and higher speeds for softer metals. Clamp the drill bit firmly in the chuck and align it perpendicular to the work surface to ensure a straight hole. Apply steady, even pressure and allow the drill to cut without forcing; withdraw periodically to clear chips if drilling deep holes. Use cutting fluid when drilling steel or other ferrous metals to reduce heat and extend tool life.
For best results, use a center punch to mark the start point to prevent wandering, choose a drill speed appropriate to the metal type, and use cutting lubricant when drilling steel. Inspect the bit for wear and replace if the cutting edges become blunt to maintain hole quality and reduce operator effort.
