Drill bit Irwin 10502554 — twist drill bit, Ø 5 mm, single piece
Drill bit Irwin 10502554 — twist drill bit, Ø 5 mm, single piece
Irwin 10502554 is a single 5 mm twist drill bit engineered for general-purpose and heavy-duty drilling tasks. Made from HSS with 5% cobalt content, this bit offers improved heat and abrasion resistance compared with standard high-speed steel drills. The rigid spiral flutes support efficient chip evacuation, while the heavy-duty web construction enhances strength and reduces the risk of breakage. A 135° split point design reduces bit wander and starts cutting immediately, making it suitable for handheld and bench drills when drilling metal, wood, and plastics with appropriate speeds and feeds.
The cobalt-alloy HSS composition provides higher thermal stability and wear resistance for extended tool life when drilling abrasive or hardened materials. The heavy-duty web increases core strength to resist bending and snapping under load. The 135° split point reduces walking on the workpiece and improves centering without the need for a pilot hole in many cases. Spiral flutes ensure reliable chip removal to maintain cutting efficiency and surface finish across a range of materials.
Select the 5 mm Irwin HSS cobalt drill bit and secure it properly in the chuck of a handheld drill or drill press. Use appropriate cutting fluid and lower drilling speeds when working with hardened or stainless steels to reduce heat buildup; higher speeds are acceptable for wood and plastics. Apply steady, moderate feed pressure and allow the flutes to clear chips regularly. Retract occasionally on deep holes to remove chips and prevent clogging. Secure the workpiece and use clamps or a vice to ensure accurate, safe drilling.
For optimal performance and service life, use cutting fluid when drilling ferrous or heat-treated metals, reduce speed under heavy load, and avoid side loads that can cause bit breakage. Inspect the bit for wear before use and replace when the cutting edges become dull or chipped.
