Spade drill bit Irwin 10502804 — 8 mm diameter, for wood drilling
Irwin 10502804 spade drill bit — 8 mm diameter — is a flat spade-style bit designed for manual and powered wood drilling. Intended for use in soft and hard wood, plywood and chipboard, this bit offers rapid material removal and efficient through-hole drilling. The 1/4" quick-change shank fits standard chucks and quick-change screwdriver/drill adapters, while design features such as scribing spurs and a reinforced cutting edge improve hole quality and tool life.
Double cutting spurs scribe the outside of the hole to reduce breakout and produce cleaner entry and exit surfaces. A thicker cutting edge increases resistance to wear and extends service life during repetitive drilling tasks. The BLUE-GROOVE point and cutting edge promote faster chip evacuation, reducing clogging and heat buildup. A slightly larger shank adds durability and improves retention in the chuck, and the 1/4" quick-change shank enables fast bit swaps in compatible drivers.
Mark the drilling location and, if required, use a center punch or pilot mark to prevent walking. Secure the workpiece to prevent movement. Install the spade bit into the drill chuck or quick-change holder and tighten securely. Begin drilling at moderate speed, applying steady pressure; increase speed once the spade bit has established the groove. Clear chips periodically when drilling deep holes to maintain chip flow and reduce heat. After use, remove wood debris from the cutting edges and store the bit dry to prevent corrosion.
To achieve the best hole quality and extend bit life, use a backing board when drilling through thin or laminated materials, maintain moderate drilling speed to avoid overheating, and replace the bit if cutting edges become visibly worn or chipped.
