Spade drill bit Irwin 10502810, diameter 17 mm, for wood
Irwin 10502810 spade drill bit, 17 mm diameter, is engineered for fast drilling in wood. The flat paddle profile and double cutting spurs produce cleaner hole edges and efficient chip ejection, making it suitable for through-holes in soft and medium-hard timber. It fits standard drill chucks and quick-change 1/4" hex holders, enabling use with handheld and bench drills for a range of carpentry and installation tasks.
The drill bit features double cutting spurs that scribe the outside of the hole to reduce breakout and deliver cleaner finishes. A thicker cutting edge improves wear resistance and extends life under repeated use. A specially shaped point and cutting edge promote faster chip removal, reducing binding and improving drilling speed. The shank has increased diameter for added durability, and the 1/4" quick-change shank provides rapid attachment and compatibility with standard quick-change chucks.
Secure the spade bit in a compatible drill chuck or quick-change holder, ensuring the shank is seated fully. Mark the drilling location and start at low speed to establish the hole, then increase speed as the bit cuts. Apply steady, moderate pressure and allow the bit's cutting spurs to score the outer edge before pushing through the workpiece. Periodically clear chips from the hole to maintain cutting efficiency.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and hearing protection. For cleaner exit holes in thin or delicate stock, back the workpiece on scrap wood to reduce splintering. Keep the bit clean and sharpen or replace when wear degrades cutting performance.
