Spade drill bit Irwin 10502812, diameter 19 mm, for wood drilling
The Irwin spade drill bit, diameter 19 mm, is engineered for efficient wood drilling where fast material removal and straight, coarse holes are required. Its paddle-shaped tip and reinforced cutting geometry make it suitable for use with hand-held drills and drill presses when working with timber, plywood and softwood. The bit incorporates features that improve hole quality and tool life while supporting quick bit changes in compatible chucks.
The double cutting spurs score the wood outside the hole to reduce breakout and produce cleaner edges. A thicker cutting edge increases resistance to wear for longer usable life, while the BLUE-GROOVE point and cutting edge promote faster chip evacuation to prevent clogging. The enlarged shank diameter adds durability and stability in the chuck, and the 1/4" quick-change shank allows fast installation and removal in quick-change adapters and compatible drivers.
Secure the workpiece and clamp it to prevent movement during drilling. Fit the 1/4" quick-change shank into a compatible chuck or adapter and tighten according to the drill manufacturer’s instructions. Select an appropriate drilling speed for the wood type—lower speeds for harder woods and higher speeds for softwoods—apply steady pressure, and allow the bit to clear chips frequently. For through-holes, start drilling from the entry side and support the exit side or use a backing board to minimise breakout.
Maintain sharpness by avoiding excessive side loading and replace the bit if the cutting edge becomes excessively worn or damaged. Use appropriate safety equipment, clamp the workpiece, and follow the drill and workshop safety guidelines when operating.
