Spade drill bit Irwin 10502814, diameter 22 mm, for wood
Irwin spade drill bit 22 mm is a flat wood bit designed for fast removal of material and creation of through-holes in soft and hardwoods. The bit features double cutting spurs that scribe the outside of the hole to reduce breakout and a thicker cutting edge for extended life. A Blue-Groove point and cutting edge promote quicker chip evacuation, while a reinforced shank and 1/4" quick-change connection provide compatibility with standard drill chucks and quick bit changes during on-site work.
The double cutting spurs minimize splintering at the hole perimeter and improve edge quality, and the thicker cutting edge increases durability under repeated use. The Blue-Groove geometry optimizes chip flow to maintain drilling speed and reduce clogging. A slightly larger shank improves resistance to bending and wear, and the 1/4" quick-change shank enables fast swapping in drills or impact drivers equipped with compatible chucks.
Secure the workpiece firmly with clamps before drilling and select an appropriate speed for the wood type: higher speed for softwoods, lower speed for hard and dense woods. Insert the 1/4" quick-change shank into the drill chuck or quick-change adapter until fully seated. Position the bit perpendicular to the work surface and start drilling with steady, moderate pressure; allow the cutting spurs to score the perimeter before advancing. Periodically withdraw the bit to clear chips if the hole is deep, and finish by reducing speed to avoid tear-out on exit.
Use protective eyewear and dust extraction or a vacuum when drilling. For clean edges on delicate surfaces, consider backing the workpiece with sacrificial material. Inspect the bit for wear before use and replace if the cutting edge is damaged to maintain hole quality and safe operation.
