Spade drill bit Irwin 10502818 — diameter 2.8 cm
Irwin spade drill bit with a 2.8 cm diameter is designed for fast, efficient holemaking in wood and similar soft materials. The flat spade blade with a centering point enables rapid material removal and accurate starts, while the 1/4" quick-change hex shank fits standard drill chucks and quick-change adapters. Overall length and blade geometry provide stable drilling for tasks that require large-diameter holes such as wiring, plumbing and carpentry.
Double cutting spurs scribe the outside of the hole to reduce breakout and deliver a cleaner edge. A thicker cutting edge improves resistance to wear and extends useful drilling life. The BLUE-GROOVE point and cutting edge channel chips away from the hole for faster penetration and reduced clogging. A slightly larger shank increases durability and provides better grip in chucks and quick-change holders.
Mark the hole location and secure the workpiece to prevent movement. Use a drill with a compatible 1/4" quick-change or hex chuck and set an appropriate speed for wood (moderate to high RPM depending on material hardness). Align the centering point with the mark and apply steady, even pressure; allow the bit's cutting edges and spurs to do the work without forcing. Withdraw the bit periodically to clear chips when drilling deep holes, and finish the exit side by reducing feed rate to minimize breakout.
For best results, use the spade bit on sharp, clean wood and avoid prolonged use in abrasive or metal-containing materials. Keep the bit cool by intermittent drilling and clearing chips; resharpen or replace the bit when cutting performance degrades. Use appropriate personal protective equipment, clamp the workpiece, and follow drill manufacturer safety instructions.
