Spade drill bit Irwin 10502821, diameter 35 mm
Irwin 10502821 spade drill bit, diameter 35 mm, is a flat paddle-style bit designed for fast removal of wood and similar soft materials when used with hand or bench drills. The 35 mm cutting diameter creates straight, large-diameter holes suitable for routing cables and pipes, forming pilot holes for joinery, and other rough carpentry tasks. The bit combines a reinforced edge geometry and chip-management features to improve drilling speed and prolong service life.
The paddle blade includes double cutting spurs that scribe the outside of the hole to reduce breakout and deliver a cleaner entry and exit. A thicker cutting edge increases durability and wear resistance during repeated use in timber. The BLUE-GROOVE point and cutting edge help evacuate chips faster, reducing clogging and heat build-up. The larger shank diameter provides added strength, and the 1/4" quick-change shank ensures compatibility with standard quick-change drill chucks and holders for faster bit changes.
Secure the spade bit in the drill chuck or quick-change holder and set the drill to an appropriate speed for the material. Use a steady, even feed rate—allow the bit to cut without excessive pressure to avoid burning or bit damage. For through-holes, support the exit side of the workpiece to minimize breakout. Clear chips regularly during prolonged drilling to maintain efficient cutting and prevent clogging.
Use medium drill speeds for softwood and reduce speed for hardwood or laminated materials. When drilling deep holes, withdraw the bit periodically to remove chips. Wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. For precise, clean holes, consider using a backing board or pilot guide in conjunction with the spade bit.
