Lantronix EDS-MD 8-Port serial server RS-232 10/100/1000Base-T
The Lantronix EDS-MD 8-Port serial server RS-232 10/100/1000Base-T is a medical-grade multi-port device server designed to connect and manage serial equipment over Gigabit Ethernet. Compliant with UL and IEC-60601 standards for medical equipment, this model provides eight individually isolated RS-232 ports, galvanic isolation across ports, and an ARM11 600 MHz processor to support reliable data transfer and device management in clinical and industrial environments. The unit supports a wide input voltage range (100–240 V) and includes security features such as 128-bit AES, 3DES, SSH-2, SSL/TLS and common hashing algorithms to protect sensitive communications.
The device offers galvanic isolation on all serial ports to reduce the risk of electrical interference or grounding problems affecting connected equipment. Gigabit Ethernet connectivity (10/100/1000Base-T) ensures high bandwidth for multiple simultaneous serial connections, while the ARM11 processor delivers stable performance for protocol handling and encryption tasks. Built-in support for secure protocols (SSH, SSL/TLS) and encryption algorithms (128-bit AES, 3DES, MD5, SHA-1) enables encrypted remote access and secure data transport. Simple configuration is available through Web, CLI and XML management interfaces, and compatibility with Lantronix Secure Com Port Redirector allows legacy serial applications to use virtual COM ports without code changes.
This device is specialized for RS-232 serial connectivity; it is not suitable for equipment requiring RS-485, TTL serial levels or other proprietary interfaces without external converters. While providing extensive encryption and secure management, it is not a substitute for a full network security solution; network-level protections such as firewalls and VLAN segmentation may still be required. The product is optimized for device-server roles and may be excessive for simple, single-point serial-to-USB conversions.
Mount the EDS-MD unit in a suitable location and connect serial devices to the RS-232 ports using compliant cabling. Attach the network connection to a Gigabit switch or router and apply the required 100–240 V AC power. Access the management interfaces via Web GUI, CLI or XML to configure network settings, port parameters and security options. Use Lantronix Secure Com Port Redirector to map virtual COM ports on host systems so existing serial applications can communicate with connected devices without code modification. Enable and configure encryption and authentication options to secure remote sessions and data transfers.
For secure operation in clinical and industrial settings, enable end-to-end encryption (AES or 3DES), use the Secure Com Port Redirector for legacy applications, and place the EDS-MD on a dedicated management VLAN or behind appropriate network segmentation to limit exposure to untrusted networks.
