Hand Tap M20x2.0 FANAR DIN 2181 — 2-piece HSS set, thread pitch 2.0mm
Hand Tap M20x2.0 FANAR DIN 2181 — 2-piece HSS set, thread pitch 2.0mm is a professional manual tapping set for cutting metric internal threads with 2.0 mm pitch. The set contains two HSS taps made to DIN 2181 dimensions: a taper (starter) tap and a plug/second tap for completing the thread profile. These high-speed steel taps are suitable for use in pre-drilled holes and are intended for manual tapping operations in a range of metals including steel, stainless steel, and non-ferrous alloys.
The two-piece configuration provides progressive cutting: the taper tap starts the thread smoothly, reducing torque and alignment issues, and the plug/second tap finishes the thread with improved precision. HSS material offers good hardness and wear resistance for general-purpose tapping, while DIN 2181 sizing ensures compatibility with metric threaded components. The set’s 2.0 mm pitch is standard for M20 threads requiring finer pitch than coarse variants, enabling reliable fastening where thread engagement and clamping accuracy are important.
This hand tap set is intended for manual use and is not designed for high-speed machine tapping or CNC threading operations. For very hard or heavily case-hardened steels, carbide or specialized taps may be required; using these HSS taps on such materials can lead to premature wear or breakage. Also, if a coarse M20 thread is required, this fine-pitch M20x2.0 set will not be appropriate.
Drill the hole to the correct core diameter for an M20×2.0 thread using appropriate drill size and secure the workpiece. Apply suitable cutting fluid to reduce friction and improve chip evacuation. Start with the taper tap, aligning it squarely to the hole and turning slowly by hand using a tap wrench until the taper establishes the thread. Back off periodically to break chips and clear the flutes. Once the taper tap reaches its effective depth, switch to the plug/second tap to complete and size the thread, again using controlled turns and clearing chips frequently. After tapping, clean the threaded hole and inspect the thread for correct engagement.
Use progressive tapping with the included taper and plug taps, apply cutting fluid for metal work, and clear chips regularly. For repetitive or high-volume jobs consider machine taps or coated/specialized taps appropriate for harder materials.
